Vinland Saga is an animation taking place in about 100 BC during the times of clans and wars. This story has a main protagonist named Thorfinn and the first season is about him as a kid. For the first half of the season, it’s focused on his father’s Thors. Thors was the best warrior and he was feared on the battlefield. For 15 years he had been fighting a war against the English fighting alongside the Danish. One day he realized that the killing was bad and he had no real enemies. Amid the battle, he ran away to Iceland with a girl and started a whole new life there. Thors was all about peace and didn’t want to fight unless it was to protect his village. The nation that Thors abandoned was the Danes because he didn’t wanna fight anymore. Thorfinn strived to be a strong fighter like his dad without knowing his dad didn’t want to fight.
The true story starts when the Danish pulled up to Thors land saying if he didn’t fight with them they would kill him and his old Danish partner had a plot against him. He made a deal with another Danish clan. The plan was they would make Thors go to an abandoned place on the sea and then kill him. Since Thors betrayed his clan the king issued a death penalty on him. His son was eager to go to war but Thors told him to take care of his mom. Basically when they were shipping off the son snuck on there without anybody looking.
In my personal opinion, I think that this anime is one of the best new-gen animes. All your emotions get let out watching this show. This show allows you to build a deep connection with certain characters. I also like the fact that this is based on very old times with the ships, clans, and wars. One review said that the first season was amazing and unique but the second season takes a more realistic approach to the consequences of war. I agree because Thorfinn was a completely different person after all he saw he became numb and in the second season, he lost his purpose in life and wondered what was his purpose to live and why war was a thing.
Somebody said that Vinland Saga season two takes all the excitement from season one and throws it in the bin. I think this is one of the most absurd things I’ve heard from a review in my entire life. The main point of the show was to give viewers a sense of peace because this anime isn’t just an action anime. What I got from the show is that never act out in revenge or never let it consume you because the worst can happen to you. Also, I get where this person is coming from because at first, I didn’t like season 2 because Thorfinn wasn’t a savage animal. But the more I watched it the more I understood why the creators took this approach to season 2. It perfectly lines with the story. Thorfinn lost everything now he’s trying to find peace.
