Athlete of the Month – February
Katelynn Martinez (Girls Basketball)
Katelynn Martinez, also known as K-mart, has been a pivotal part to the Chargers’ success this year. She is a junior guard on the team and has been a huge threat to other teams throughout the year. The Chargers have a record of 27-5 this year and head to Sectionals on February 22 to play Springfield, the team that knocked them out of the IHSA tournament last year. As a freshman, Katelynn was on the 1st team Big 12 all-conference and 2nd team News Gazette all-area. In her sophomore year she was a 3 sport athlete and was on 1st team Big 12 all-conference and 2nd team News Gazette all-area for basketball; and 1st team News Gazette all-area and 1st team Big 12 all-conference for soccer.
How long have you been playing basketball?
– 2nd grade
What has been your favorite basketball memory since you began playing?
– Winning state in 8th grade.
What is your best memory of this season?
– Winning the conference back to back.
Who is your role model and why?
– My mom because she is the most supportive, caring mother and is always there for me whenever I need her.
Who is the funniest person on the team?
– Chelsea Cross
What is your biggest accomplishment in basketball?
– Making the Big 12 first team as a freshman.
What is the hardest thing about basketball?
– To stay level-headed and not get mad at myself.
If you could describe yourself in 3 words, what would they be?
– Athletic, Shy, Neat Freak.
What is your biggest phobia?
– Snakes
What is your favorite food?
– Steak
