November 1st, marked the start of “Movember”, also known as “No-shave November.” Movember started out as a prostate cancer awareness movement that encouraged men to grow a mustache by going without shaving for the entire month of November.

Popularity of this event has since spread and taken on the name of No-shave November, as it has even become tradition for some girls to participate by abstaining from shaving their legs. This new wave of participants has received lots of negative feedback from men. November 1st, Twitter spiked with tweets all similar to “LADIES, do not participate in No-shave November!” Senior, Peter Mehnert comments on girls’ participation by saying “It’s disgusting.” then pointed out that guys are only growing out their faces.

Before the start of November, I asked Senior, Holly Bush to participate in this event so that I could keep tabs on a girl’s experience as opposed to a guy. A week into November I asked her how she was feeling, “I’m not going to lie, it’s a little gross.” And then admitted she was starting to feel a little regret about agreeing to participate.

Senior, Lucas Stefan is someone you could regularly find with a little bit of facial hair and November is no exception. Stefan commented, “It’s a fun thing to do and I got a lot of compliments but by the end I was ready to shave!”.

Another No-shave November participant, Peter Black, who usually shaves regularly, agreed that it was a nice change from having to shave regularly then added, “No-shave November is a time when boys turn into men.” Black broke down and ended up shaving by November 15th.

By the end of the month, participants were starting to feel a little scruffy but nothing feels better than that December 1st shave!

For future participants a website, www.movember.com, offers an official place for men to sign-up and participate. They have raised over 149 million since they first started. It looks like the controversy over female participation will always remain. However, it seems hypocritical if they are supporting a great cause; and if they aren’t? I guess that one is up in the air.
